CEH Requirements

  • Novice Level interpreters are required to earn 20 hours of CEHs each cycle year (not calendar year)
  • Professional Level interpreters are required to earn 60 hours of CEHs during each 3-year cycle
  • EIPA interpreters are required to earn 20 hours of CEHs each cycle year (not calendar year)
  • All CEHs to count towards maintenance must be accrued during the cycle year.

    The calendar year runs January-December of the same year. The individual renewal/cycle year runs one (1) year from the month testing results are received. Your individual renewal month and cycle date are displayed on the "Interpreter Information" screen in the "Interpreter Login" link which requires your password, as well as on your certification card.

    How to Earn CEHs

  • All workshops and activities must be PRE-APPROVED prior to the activity. The most important strategy is to plan ahead so you do not miss any opportunities to earn CEHs.
  • Approved CEHs may include any UIP or RID approved activity; group activities (workshops, lectures, conferences) or independent study activities (mentoring, self-study); academic coursework taken from an accredited institution (see next section).
  • CEH approval will not be given after the event takes place. CEH approval is not retroactive.


    HOW TO OBTAIN CEH APPROVAL

  • Download the CEH Approval Form for INTERPRETERS and fax (801.313.6810) or mail (UIP, 5709 S 1500 W, Taylorsville UT 84123-5217) to UIP. This form must be submitted PRIOR to the activity for which you are seeking credit.


    Content Areas for Academic Coursework

  • Professional Studies: maximum of 18 of the required 20 CEH hours for Novice Level and EIPAinterpreters; and 54 of the required 60 CEH hours for Professional Level interpreters must be related to
  • Linguistic and cultural studies, which includes the study of any language or linguistic system and the study of any specific culture
  • Theoretical and experiential studies, which include the process of interpreting and transliterating theory and skill-building activities
  • Specialization studies. which include specialized aspects of interpreting used in settings such as the legal, medical, mental health and substance-abuse recovery fields


    General Studies

  • 2 CEH hours for Novice Level and EIPA interpreters, and 6 CEH hours for Professional Level interpreters may be applied toward certification maintenance. This content includes:
  • Human service and leadership studies, which include topics such as leadership skills, public relations, public speaking and community resources
  • General knowledge studies, which include areas less obviously related to the field of interpreting and transliteraion but are educationally beneficial to the participant


    Activities that do NOT count toward CEHs

  • Board/Committee activities
  • Professional service delivery
  • Lunch, dinner, socials, or entertainment
  • Activities that are part of one's routine employment responsibilities (i.e., inservice or work-related training meetings)
