Staff Interpreter

Responsibilities include:

Provide American Sign Language interpreting services for employees located at Sorenson Communications Headquarters in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is a PT 29 hour position.

Provide interpreting services for Sorenson Communications' corporate meetings, events, interviews and other situations as needed.

Interpreter will also complete projects as assigned, provide VRI services when requested and interpret in a VRS setting when necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to effectively communicate in American Sign Language (ASL)
  • Preferred 5-10 years working experience as a certified sign language interpreter in a variety of settings
  • NAD level IV/V, or RID :CI, CT, CI/CT, CSC, NIC or
  • Hold a State interpreter certificate at the Professional (Intermediate) or Master Certificate skill level
  • Excellent voicing skills and a good understanding of deaf culture
  • Experience with video interpreting required
  • Demonstrates professionalism, flexibility, extreme adherence to ethical and confidentiality standards

Compensation: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

JOB SUMMARY:
Interprets instructor's lectures, comments and questions for deaf/hard-of-hearing students in a mainstream classroom setting; interprets students' questions and statements; interprets for school functions as assigned; adapts signing level and system to the communication needs of the students; tutors as appropriate under the supervision of the classroom instructor; follows the code of ethics for certified interpreters; participates cooperatively as a member of the educational team; assists in coordinating note taking for students as needed; communicates regularly with instructors, program specialist and lead interpreter about student progress and concerns; follows schedule as determined by program specialist; is willing to improve signing skills through inservices and additional classes; performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS:
Must possess a current Intermediate Level Sign Language Certification from the Utah Certification Board, EIPA rating of 3.5 or higher, or equivalent certification. Successful
completion of criminal background check is required for this position.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Salary commensurate with EIPA certification. This position is eligible for full benefits including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability insurance, 1.5% employer
contribution to 401(k), sick leave, pension, and other valuable benefits. The State requires employees to receive their pay through Direct Deposit or EPPICard.

ASSIGNMENT PERIOD:
This is a full-time, nine-month-per year position. Work schedule Monday through Friday, seven (7) hours per
day.

Freelance Interpreters

The Sign Language Interpreters agency is looking for freelance interpreters.

Pay: $35/hr

Utah Novice Level interpreters will be paid $30/hr, with the remaining $5 put toward advancement training necessary to pass Utah Advanced Level or national certification(workshops, testing, school, etc.). Any monies remaining after advancement will be paid to the interpreter.
