JOB SUMMARY Provides interpreting services as an ADA accommodation for deaf/hard-of-hearing staff members, teachers, parents, community members, and others in formal and informal agency and educational settings. Interprets for large and small group gatherings, such as: public meetings, school functions, administrative meetings, student and parent meetings, employment interviews, and other school events. Adapts signing level and system to the communication needs of those involved in each assignment; adapts voice interpretation to fit the expressive intent of those involved in each assignment; follows the code of ethics for certified interpreters; participates cooperatively as a member of the interpreting team; communicates regularly with the Associate Superintendent of the School for the Deaf regarding interpreting needs and concerns; follows schedule as determined by the Associate Superintendent; is willing to improve signing and voicing skills through inservices and additional classes; performs other duties as assigned.

JOB REQUIREMENTS/SKILLS Must possess a current Level II or higher Sign Language Certification from the Utah Certification Board, or other interpreter certification recognized by the State of Utah. There are moderate physical requirements for this position, as work requires the physical exertion associated with sign language interpreting, including situations requiring long periods of interpreting. Some travel is required, particularly along the Wasatch Front. Overnight stay to other areas of the state may be required on occasion. Must have and maintain a valid Utah driver license and clean driving record. Successful completion of criminal background check is required for this position.

SALARY AND BENEFITS Salary commensurate with State certification ($20.50 to $26.89 hourly). This position is eligible for full benefits including medical, dental, life insurance, long term disability insurance, 1.5% employer contribution to 401(k), sick leave, personal leave, pension, and other valuable benefits. The State requires employees to receive their pay through Direct Deposit or J. P. Morgan Chase debit card.

ASSIGNMENT PERIOD Typical work schedule for this position is Monday through Friday, twenty-six-and-a-half (26-1/2) hours per week, not to exceed 1,372 hours per year. Must be willing to work flexible hours to accommodate administrative needs.

Description
Works within the overall scope of the Urban Central Region Language Services to Deliver American Sign Language interpretation, to meet the needs of UCR hospital staff and providers, deaf patients and their families.

  • Provides complete and accurate interpretation for patients, families and hospital staff as needed, in order to facilitate communication, understanding and decision making through informed consent. Interpretation is provided applying cultural sensitivity and without personal bias to ensure accuracy.
  • Responds to pagers promptly (within 120 seconds) even when actively interpreting for staff and physicians, giving Language Services staff and Hospital staff an accurate estimate time of arrival for interpreting assignments and arrives on time to such assignments.
  • Assists patients, families and guest to understand hospital services. Recognizes and troubleshoots patients/guests' problems and requests, referring them to hospital staff as needed.
  • Assist patients explaining and filling out forms as required/allowed.
  • Communicates effectively and works as part of a team. Displays ability to get along with coworkers, other departments and the public.
  • Possess professional demeanor to interact with patients, families, guests and staff.
  • Participates in performance evaluations
  • Participates daily in the team effort to provide quality service to all its customers and efficiently complete all required department work and tasks within required deadlines
  • Performs office work and other duties assigned by supervisor.
  • Report to Language Service staff during assignments to maximize utilization. Uses time efficiently.
  • Must comply with department continuing education (self study) and pass in-house medical terminology interpreting tests with 70% or higher to keep employment.
  • Must keep ASL certification current to keep employment.
  • Employee exhibits behaviors consistent with Intermountain's Mission, Vision and Values.

This is a PRN position where the hired individual will pick up shifts on an as needed basis.

Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:

  • College Degree. Intermountain verifies both degree attainment and educational institution accreditation following an offer of employment.
  • 3 years of experience interpreting in health care environment
  • Certification in any of these following areas: Utah State Certification: Level 2 (also called "Professional" level) or above (Masters Level). Master level preferred. -OR- National RID (National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf certification): This interpreter must have both credentials: Certified Interpreter (CI) and Certified Transliterator (CT). -OR- NIC Certification (National Interpreter Certification). Advanced or Master level preferred.
  • Competency to interpret advanced medical terminology
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Academic background in health care or education
  • Formal medical terminology class (semester) at a College/University level is preferred or must be completed independently within the first 6 months of employment.
