This workshop will consist of a discussion/book review while providing a fun new approach to strengthening ASL skills.
Step 1: Prior to the workshop, read the selected text (The Shack, by William P. Young). Come prepared with a dictionary and notebook! While you read, keep in mind these literature components:
* Description of characters and settings
* Vocabulary (both that is unfamiliar to you and any that stands out as interesting)
* Author's use of language to create mood or evoke emotion
* Salient themes (NOTE: This text has strong religious and emotional themes that may elicit strong responses.)
What would these look like in ASL? How can you interpret these effectively? If you feel uncomfortable with any of the concepts presented, use it as an opportunity to consider how you would respond to a similar situation while interpreter. It may be helpful to keep notes on these topics as you read.
Step 2: Come to the 2hour workshop! It will be an open-discussion forum regarding the above-mentioned components and ASL equivalency. Please come prepared to participate.
This is a great excuse to read a book!
